For today’s #WebinarWednesday, we return to the penultimate iHealthTube video interview. I explain why we are like cars and that with time, if we survive all our cancers, we would eventually accumulate them all. Just like if you drive a car for millions of miles, you will replace all parts.
Simply stated, telomerase is neither pro nor anti-tumorigenic any more than a foot or a brake pedal cause car accidents while driving down a mountain. Telomerase, like a driver’s foot, prevents carcinogenesis by speeding up or slowing down the car.
Just yesterday, I was speaking with my patient who remarked that her 88 year old husband and she hadn’t gotten the usual colds for years since starting TA-65. If what we think about immune senescence being at the heart of aging, then it is encouraging that so many patients taking a telomerase activator report decreased severity and frequency of colds and flus.
I would like to discuss the idea that TA is either all or nothing. TA doesn’t DO anything that your body isn’t already trying to do. It increases the efficiency of telomerase, which may have benefits in prevention of stem cell damage.
Janet Rowley, MD, was known for proposing that cancers are caused by a genetic malfunction, more specifically by translocation of DNA from the ends of one chromosome to another. What is the process that allows this to occur? It is telomere erosion. This is the basis of my unified theory of aging and disease illustrated by this diagram from my book, “Telomere Timebombs: Defusing the Terror of Aging”
